About Coach Behar RajBari:
Overview-
Built in 1887 by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of the Koch dynasty, the palace is an iconic example of Italian Renaissance–style architecture in India, reminiscent of London’s Buckingham Palace
Formerly three storeys tall, it was reduced to two levels after the 1897 Assam earthquake destroyed the top floor
Architectural Features-
A brick-built structure covering over 51,000 sq ft, approximately 395 ft long by 296 ft wide, elevated around 4 ft above ground
The façade features arcaded verandahs with alternating single and double-row piers on both floors
A central projected porch leads into the Durbar Hall, which is capped by a striking metal dome topped with a cylindrical louver ventilator and supported by Corinthian columns; the dome reaches roughly 124 ft high
Interiors & History-
The palace originally held over 50 rooms: Durbar Hall, drawing rooms, dining hall, billiard room, library, bedrooms, Tosha Khana, ladies’ gallery, and vestibules—all of which housed royal artifacts that are now lost
It showcases the embrace of European architectural ideals by the Koch kings while retaining an Indian royal heritage essence
Historical & Cultural Significance-
Cooch Behar was a princely state ruled by the Koch dynasty, which formed part of the larger Kamata kingdom. The family aligned with British forces to resist Himalayan invasions and later acceded to India in 1949
Tripadvisor
The palace is also notable as the birthplace of Maharani Gayatri Devi (born 1919), who later became the Maharani of Jaipur and a prominent political figure
