In this video, I explore the strange and unsettling experiences of derealization and depersonalization, often grouped together as Derealization Depersonalization Disorder (DPDR). If you’ve ever felt disconnected from yourself or like the world around you isn’t real, you’re not alone. As a therapist—and someone who’s personally been through this—I want to help you make sense of these feelings and show you that they’re more common than you might think.
In this video, I’ll talk about:
• What derealization feels like and how it’s often described.
• Why depersonalization can happen when we’re stressed or anxious.
• How the fight or flight response plays a role in these symptoms.
• The anxious “what-ifs” that keep these feelings going.
For some, these sensations are part of anxiety. For others, especially those who’ve experienced trauma or PTSD, they might be linked to a dissociative state. If that’s you, a trauma-informed approach to therapy is often the best way forward.
I’ve worked with many people who’ve had the same fears I used to: What if I’m stuck like this forever? What if this means something’s seriously wrong? These thoughts are common, but they don’t have to keep you in the cycle. In this video, I’ll share what I’ve learned professionally and personally to help ease those worries and shine a light on this strange experience.
