Exciting news this morning, when we heard that that highly damning extubation rate at Liverpool Women's of 40% was based on 4 extubations in in 11 shifts. A basic statistical analysis says that we can be 99% sure that the extubation rate lies between 7% and 77%. OK, bigger than 0.5%, but we know that the rate depends strongly on numerous characteristics of the baby. We also know that anyway, after intubation there is 50% chance of extubation almost straight away (and another attempt at intubation). Add to this the fact that this data was garnered by Dr Bill Yoxall, a friend and collaborator of Stephen Brearey and partly responsible for the stream of high risk babies being delivered at Chester who should have been delivered at Liverpool Women's. The amateurism of police, prosecution, ... and of seasoned BBC journalists is astounding.
