This is Brice with UT Kilts. This is our video on how to get all the correct measurements for any of our traditional kilt packages. It is extremely important that you measure and follow the sizing we give you during this video. If you do not, you could end up with a kilt or jacket that does not fit. Since these items are custom order, there are no returns on them so you need to make sure you get it right the first time. Also, don’t hesitate to get someone to help you measure so you know you get the right measurements
Kilt Measurements:
1. WAIST: Measure the spot on your waist where you want to wear the kilt. This may be up higher on the belly button or lower near the hips. It does not matter. Just be sure to measure where your kilt will be sitting. Typically you want to subtract 2 inches from your measurement so you end up in the middle of the adjustment straps. You can adjust that based on future weight loss or gain, but just understand that the size you order will be the smallest it can go and it will adjust up almost 4 inches from there.
2. LENGTH: Measure from the spot where the top of the kilt will be down to the spot near / on your knees you want the kilt to stop. It can be very helpful for someone to help do this so you get the measurement correct. The length of the kilt is personal preference though most do prefer mid knee. This will be the total length of your kilt so you want to make sure you get it right
3. HIPS: Not all of the listings will ask for this, but some do. Take the biggest measurement around your hip / butt.
Jacket Measurements
1. CHEST: Wrap the tape around you and get the measuring tape up into your arm pits as far as it will go. Make sure this is a loose measurement and make note of the size you get.
2. WAIST: This could be a different spot than where you measured for your kilt. If you measured lower, near your hips, then this will be a different spot to measure and may end up being bigger than your other kilt waist measurement. Remember, this really should be the biggest part of your belly and should almost always be bigger than what your waist at your hips is.
3. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER: You want to measure, in the back, from the outside of one shoulder to the outside of the other. You will need someone to help you with this measurement as it can’t be done on your own.
4. SLEEVE: Do not take this measurement from a dress shirt. You can, however, take a measurement from an existing suit coat that you currently have. This measurement is taken right at the where the shoulder stops and the arm starts. Start at that point and go down to the spot on your wrist where you want the jacket to stop. Each person is different so be sure to mark the exact spot you would like it.
5. TOTAL LENGTH: This measurement will give us the total length of your jacket, not including the collar. For this measurement you will want to measure right at the base of your neck. Don’t go too far up as this does not include the collar. You want to measure from the base of your neck down to the top of your where your kilt would be. BUT WAIT! Typically you want to add about 4 inches to that measurement. So if you measure 20 inches from the base of your neck down to the top of your kilt, you would want a kilt jacket that is 24 inches in total length. You can adjust to something shorter or longer as you feel you need.
Other items
1. Fly Plaid and Sash: The fly plaid is worn by the gentleman over the left shoulder and is typically for more formal occasions. The sash is typically worn by the ladies. There are lots of different ways to pin and fold the sash and are easily accessible on the internet. We won’t include any of them in this video. However, if you ever think you will need either of these you want to get them now. If you wait we can order them, but they may or may not match your kilt. If a new weave has come in since you ordered it will most likely be different than what you have. Also, remember to order the matching fabric sash and fly plaid. If you order an acrylic kilt, then order the acrylic fly plaid or sash. Same for the wool.
2. Belt, buckle, sporran, kilt pin, and ghillie brogues – These are pretty self-explanatory and simple to order. The ghillie brogues are optional and you can discount the package if you do not order them. They are amazing looking for your traditional kilt package, but not everyone wants them. I don’t use them often, but I do keep a pair on hand just in case.
That is the UT Kilts package measuring guide. It is an awesome deal for the full outfit that you won’t find anywhere else. If you ever need any help, feel free to reach out to me.
