Sandhoppers are very common along our coastline living buried in the sand during the day or quite often under decaying seaweed. I have had numerous bass spiting out sandhoppers when landed, especially on an offshore wind. Sandhoppers cannot fly, only jump so they must get blown into the water and washed into the incoming waves. Sandhopper imitations are also excellent for mullet so I always carry a range of imitations in my saltwater fly box. Most seem to mimic the background of the area where they live so they tend to be a whitish sand colour but I have also seen amber and light olives. They can vary in size due to their breeding habits but a size 12 is a good all round imitation. I like to add a hotspot to my sandhoppers and shrimp as a trigger point for fish and also to make imitation stand out just a little bit amongst the naturals.
