In this episode of Adventures Into History, I’m joined once again by Mrs. Linda McCardle as we explore and document the old Whitley Cemetery in Harris County, Georgia. This site began as the Russel Family burying ground but grew into a true community cemetery, likely connected to nearby Bethel Baptist Church, where many of its members were laid to rest.
Today, the Whitley Cemetery remains hidden in plain sight — right beside the road — yet most would never know it’s there. Together, Linda and I uncover forgotten gravestones long covered by time, documenting the stories of over 100 known marked graves and many more unmarked burials scattered across the grounds.
Linda shares her family’s connections to this place, including ties to the Ely family, who rest here but without markers. With every stone uncovered, we piece together the story of a cemetery that once played a central role in the community, but has since slipped into obscurity.
