Most SQL tools can render SQL, but they don’t really understand it.
The dbt Fusion engine introduces SQL comprehension, a way for dbt to interpret SQL structure, semantics, and execution behavior rather than just compile strings.
Sara Gawlinski, Technical Product Marketing Manager at dbt Labs, breaks it down into three layers:
• Parsing: Understanding SQL structure and syntax
• Compiling: Binding real metadata (types, functions, dependencies) for static analysis
• Execution: Running and optimizing queries on physical hardware
By combining these layers, Fusion can validate code in real time, detect logic errors before execution, and refactor projects safely. It’s how Fusion brings deeper awareness and precision to SQL development.
