I visited The Jack Shainman Gallery to witness Toyin Ojih Odutola’s latest exhibition. I have seen Toyin's work in books and online over the years but this go around, I wanted to see it.
Toyin Odutola is a Nigerian artist based in New York. Odutola’s work is nothing short of profound. It's like entering an exquisitely layered narrative. Her drawings becomes storytelling, and portraiture transcends identity. Each piece invites close inspection, revealing meticulously built-up marks, textures, and tonal shifts that speak to the labor of not just rendering a figure, but constructing a world.
The gaze of her subjects holds weight that's confident, contemplative, sometimes distant yet always self-possessed. There is something almost cinematic in the pacing and arrangement of the exhibition. Moving through the space, one feels part of a story unfolding silently.
