ECL Logic (Emitter Coupled Logic)

The ECL logic (Emitter coupled Logic) is one of the fastest logic among the different digital logic families. It is Bipolar Junction Transistor based logic. But unlike the TTL logic, it is non-saturated logic. And the logic swing (the difference between the Logic ‘0’ and logic ‘1’ ) is very small. Because of lower voltage swing and being non-saturated logic, the ECL logic is one of the fastest logic.
The early ECL Logic gates were using the negative power supply. Because of the negative power supply, the output of the ECL gate was immune to the variation in the power supply line.
The basic element of the ECL logic is the current steering switch, which is typically designed using the differential pair.
Because of the differential pair, the ECL logic gate inherently rejects the common mode noise efficiently.

Applications:
Clock distribution System, High-Speed data communication systems

Advantages:
1) Higher Switching Speed
2) When used with negative power supply, it is immune to power supply fluctuations
3) Effectively rejects the common mode noise
4) High Fanout
5) Current Transients due to switching does not occur in ECL (as total current drawn from the sypply remains almost constant)

Disadvantages:
Lower Noise Margin
Higher Power consumption
