Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is “concerned” about escalating U.S. efforts to acquire Greenland, after President Donald Trump warned tariffs could rise to 25 percent by June 1 if no deal is reached for what Trump called the “complete and total purchase” of the territory.
Speaking at a news conference in Doha, Carney stressed that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, adding that Canada’s position remains unchanged: Greenland’s future should be decided by its people and Denmark.
Carney also underlined that Greenland is protected under NATO, and said Canada is working with alliance partners to strengthen Arctic security amid rising geopolitical tensions.
