MATCHBOX restoration: 33A Ford Zodiac

Restoring a Lesney Matchbox No. 33A Ford Zodiac, in the Matchbox range from 1957 until 1963.

It's another rather quick restoration this time of the 33A Ford Zephyr/Zodiac Mark 2 206E casting, in the Matchbox range for 6 years. The casting was even used for the rare coachbuilt convertible, which entered the range at 39A later the same year as the 33A, lasting until 1962. However, that was a bit too much of a carbon copy, as Lesney left the rear doors cast in. The convertible conversions were only ever two door. But less on that casting, more on this one! It came in a range of colours during its production run. It started dark green, then dark blue, then blue, before we reach the sea green that this model was originally clad in. The sea green is definitely my favourite of all the options, as after this, the casting received a more realistic two-tone. Zodiac's were most commonly painted two-tone to differentiate from the Zephyrs and Consuls of the time, though single colours are possible. Sadly, Lesney opted to give it a coat of silver and orange, which just looks terrible in my opinion! Team that with the green plastic windows that were fitted towards the end of production, and you have something truly vomit inducing! Happily though I keep mine sea green.
