The Last Key Lime Pie
By Brian S. Brijbag, Esq.
Performed as part of the Stage West New Works Festival (Spring Hill, FL – August 22–24, 2025).
Set in a modest Florida kitchen during the height of hurricane season, The Last Key Lime Pie is a sharp, funny, and heartfelt one-act that turns dessert into destiny. As a storm rages outside, Doris and Earl - an aging couple with years of marital strain, humor, and history between them - find themselves locked in a battle over the final slice of Doris’s grandmother’s key lime pie.
What begins as a comedic squabble quickly reveals deeper questions about love, habit, and the sweetness still worth saving. Their fragile peace is further upended by the sudden arrival of “Florida Man,” a soaked, conspiracy-spouting intruder whose tales of gators, raccoons, and airborne lawn flamingos bring absurd chaos into the storm shelter.
Through witty banter, escalating absurdity, and moments of quiet vulnerability, the play blends laugh-out-loud comedy with poignant reflection. The pie itself becomes more than dessert - it is a symbol of survival, marriage, and the small joys that endure even when the world outside seems on the brink of collapse.
A hurricane, a marriage, a madcap visitor, and one last slice: in the end, who really gets to taste what’s left?
