Was death the only means of escape for poor Victorians trapped working long hours for low pay? Working jobs in terrible conditions in return for having to give most of their money away to crooked landlords in return for cramped, overcrowded and, too often, appalling accommodation in Spitalfields and Whitechapel. And for all this, those living in poverty in 19th Century East End London could look around them and see criminals doing much better than them. From match box making to the textile sweat shops, how did they stay honest and continue to work into what was sometimes an early grave? This is the philosophical question our investigator grapples with in this video as he tours the East End, meeting its inhabitants and uncovering their desperate living and working conditions.
