Everyone’s adding goals this year - more gym, more side hustles, more productivity. But nobody’s asking what needs to be removed first. Stanford research shows elimination is more effective than addition for lasting change - when you subtract what drains you before adding what energizes you, success rates triple. You don’t need more goals, you need less weight. You’re carrying things that don’t serve you - literal clutter, people who drain energy, substances numbing potential, food poisoning body. You’re trying to add discipline and habits while dead weight is still anchored to you. Doesn’t work. Can’t build forward dragging the past behind. Subtract first: Remove things - clutter, unused possessions, stuff taking mental space. Remove people - not everyone deserves access, the ones who mock growth, drain you, keep you small. Remove substances - alcohol to relax, junk food treats, things numbing instead of feeling. Body can’t heal while poisoned. When you subtract first you feel lighter, can finally move. Goals become easier, discipline was always there just buried under weight. Subtraction creates space, space creates clarity, clarity creates momentum. People fail resolutions adding wings while feet in cement. Remove cement first then fly. Not deprivation, liberation. Start with one thing, person, substance. Remove it, feel difference, remove next. By time you add goals you’ll be light enough to achieve them.
