The Namdroling Monastery, famously known as the Golden Temple, is one of the most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks in South India. Located in Bylakuppe (about 35 km from Madikeri and 5 km from Kushalnagar), it is part of the second largest Tibetan settlement in the world outside of Tibet.
Established in 1963 by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche, it has evolved from a simple bamboo structure into the world's largest teaching center for the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, housing over 5,000 monks and nuns.
The monastery is renowned for its stunning Indo Tibetan architecture, featuring a grand entrance guarded by ornate red and gold gates and a main prayer hall dominated by three towering, 40 foot gold plated statues of Lord Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, and Lord Amitayus. Every inch of the interior is a visual masterpiece, adorned with intricate murals and colorful thangkas that depict Buddhist mythology.
