On 1 February 1994, ITN’s cameras captured the scenes of daily life in Mexico’s southernmost state, Chiapas. The footage was filmed exactly one month after the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) launched an armed revolt in protest at the Mexican Government’s enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The uprising came to an end less than two weeks later, on 12 January, following violent street battles with the Mexican army in which 153 people were killed. By the time ITN’s cameras arrived in Chiapas, Mexican army checkpoints and patrols could be seen on every street. As well as the signs of the Mexican government’s counter-insurgency campaign, crews filmed the daily rhythms of Chiapas’ indigenous peoples and subsistence farmers. Chiapas is home to one of Mexico’s largest indigenous populations, and the Zapatista rebels drew most of their number from the state’s rural indigenous communities.
