At the second step of the sequential evaluation process, the Social Security Administration looks at whether a claimant has a medically determinable severe impairment. Generally, the Social Security Administration is looking to see if someone has an anatomical, physiological, or psychological abnormality documented by objective medical evidence from an acceptable medical source. If someone has an impairment supported by objective medical evidence, then that person will move on to step three of the sequential evaluation process. If someone does not have a medically determinable severe impairment, they lose their disability case at step two of the sequential evaluation process.
