Like many other german cities, the city of Bielefeld began with the construction of a light rail network in the 1970s. In contrast to other networks, Bielefeld kept the 1000mm gauge tracks of its tram system, which made the transition from tram to light rail service a lot easier.
The first generation of LRVs consisted of 44 Duewag M8C cars, which is used in many german tram systems. 36 cars of the further developed M8D series were baught between 1994 and 1998. For the new route to the University, five trailer cars, which can be coupled between two M8D cars, were bought in 1999.
In order to modernize the rolling stock, a total of 40 cars of the new Vamos GTZ8-B class are being delivered since 2011. They will replace the M8C stock, as well as increase the capacity on heavily used lines.
In 2021, some M8C trains were still in service on all lines. They, as well as the newer LRVs, can be seen in this video.
