Carmen Maret (b. 1979) is a flautist, composer, educator and entrepreneur from Grand Rapids, Michigan, known for her work as one-half of the Folias Duo. The duo is a collaborative musical group that includes her husband, Andrew Bergeron, with whom she composes and performs around and beyond the United States. Maret’s compositions are centered on Latin American music with evident references to jazz.
Locovals is a new original solo flute composition (written in the summer of 2019) inspired by the great tango orchestras of the “Golden Era" (1935-1955) in Argentina. This was the time of big orchestras and illustrious ballrooms in Buenos Aires. Maret’s vals here shows the rhythmic play of two over three that dancers would have enjoying showing in the interplay of footwork on the dance floor. She also includes some of her own harmonic and melodic “play” inspired by jazz, which gives the piece its “loco” (crazy) feel.
