A rare conversation with the artist redefining power, visibility, and influence in the global art world.
In 2025, the center of gravity in contemporary art shifted. Ibrahim Mahama became the first African artist to top ArtReview’s prestigious Power 100 list – marking a historic turning point in how artistic influence is understood worldwide.
Known for monumental installations made from materials encountered by chance – stitched jute sacks, discarded industrial objects, and remnants of global trade – Mahama has transformed some of the world’s most recognizable spaces, including London’s Barbican Centre. Yet his work extends far beyond scale or spectacle. Rooted in labor, community, and history, it reclaims overlooked narratives and places them at the heart of contemporary culture.
Poland has played a distinctive role in Mahama’s journey. His work has been showcased at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, and supported by Polish-Ghanaian collector Omenaa Mensah, highlighting a cultural dialogue across borders, histories, and continents.
In Pulse of Culture, we meet Ibrahim Mahama at the height of a remarkable year to reflect on global recognition, collaboration, material memory, and what it means to reimagine where power in the art world truly resides.
