Jerome Kern originally wrote this song with Oscar Hammerstein II and Otto Harbach for a 1934 London musical, “Three Sisters.” The show was a failure, but Fred Astaire happened to be in the audience and heard a song that he decided to interpolate into the 1935 film he starred in with Ginger Rogers, Irene Dunne, and Randolph Scott, entitled “Roberta.” The lyrics of the original song needed to be jazzed up to suit Astaire’s purposes, a task that was deftly accomplished by Dorothy Fields.
