1. The Greatest Injustice and Unforgivable Sin
Allah (SWT) emphasizes that Shirk is the most grievous sin, one that He will not forgive if a person dies upon it without repentance:

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin." (Surah An-Nisa, 4:48)

This verse underscores the absolute gravity of Shirk, whether ancient or modern.

2. The Command to Disbelieve in False Deities
The declaration of La ilaha illa Allah (There is no deity except Allah) is divided into two parts: the rejection of all false deities and the affirmation of Allah’s sole right to worship.

"And whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:256)

Taghut refers to anything worshipped other than Allah, whether it's an idol, a person, a desire, or an ideology. Recognizing modern Taghut is crucial for our Iman.

3. The Definition of Disbelief (Kufr)
Kufr is the opposite of Iman (faith). It can manifest as denial, rejection, or covering up the truth of Allah and His Messenger.

"Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers – never will the [whole] earth full of gold be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers." (Surah Ali 'Imran, 3:91)
