Cyberbullying is using technology to harass, threaten, or humiliate someone, which can include mean texts, social media posts, or sharing personal information online. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can be anonymous, reach a wide audience quickly, and is difficult to escape because it can happen anywhere at any time. The harm it causes can lead to severe emotional and psychological distress.
What cyberbullying includes
Harassment: Sending or posting hurtful, mean, or threatening messages, comments, or emails.
Impersonation: Creating fake social media accounts to spread rumors or post embarrassing content about someone.
Doxing: Sharing someone's private or personal information online without their permission.
Exclusion: Deliberately leaving someone out of online group chats, games, or forums.
Trolling: Posting inflammatory or offensive content to provoke a reaction.
Sharing embarrassing media: Posting insulting or embarrassing photos or videos of someone without their consent.
Where it happens
Social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)
Text messages and emails
Online gaming platforms and chat rooms
Instant messaging apps
Blogs and forums
Why it's harmful
It can follow you everywhere: Cyberbullying is not confined to school or a specific location; it can occur at any time of day or night.
Anonymity: Perpetrators can sometimes hide their identity, making it harder to hold them accountable and increasing a victim's fear and confusion.
Wide reach: A single post or message can be seen by a large number of people very quickly.
Long-lasting impact: The digital content can be difficult to remove completely.
Emotional and psychological effects: It can lead to anxiety, depression, and other serious mental health issues.
