The morning sun glints off steel in the training yard of the Red Keep. A small boy, no older than five, grips a wooden sword with both hands. His face is flushed with exertion, black hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. Striking blue eyes—unmistakably Baratheon eyes—narrow with concentration as he faces his opponent.
Ser Barristan Selmy, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, circles the boy slowly. The old knight's movements are measured, patient. He's trained many princes in his long years of service, but something about this one brings a smile to his weathered face.
Joffrey: (determined) Again, Ser Barristan. I can do better.
Ser Barristan: (warmly) Your form improves with each session, my prince. But remember—a good swordsman knows when to attack and when to observe.
The boy lunges forward, executing a passable thrust. Barristan deflects it easily, but there's approval in his eyes. The technique is crude, yes, but the determination is genuine.
From the edge of the yard, a booming laugh echoes across the stone. King Robert Baratheon stands with his arms crossed, a broad grin splitting his bearded face. For the first time in years, genuine joy radiates from the king. This boy—this son who looks so much like him—has become the center of his world in ways he never imagined.
Robert: (shouting, prideful) That's my boy! Put your back into it, Joffrey!
The prince glances toward his father, and his face lights up. He redoubles his efforts, attacking with renewed vigor. Robert's laughter grows louder. This is what he'd dreamed of—a son to mold, to teach, to pass his legacy to. Not the golden-haired children who look nothing like him, who seem to belong more to Cersei and her damned family than to House Baratheon. No, this boy is his.
The training session continues for another hour. When it ends, Joffrey is exhausted but beaming. Robert claps him on the shoulder—gently, for the boy is still small—and walks with him back toward the keep.
Robert: (satisfied) You're getting stronger, boy. Soon enough, you'll be winning tournaments. Aye, and breaking hearts from Dorne to the Wall.
Joffrey: (earnestly) I want to be like you, father. A great warrior. A great king.
Something shifts in Robert's expression. The boy's words cut through years of cynicism and self-loathing. He kneels down to look his son in the eyes.
Robert: (serious, tender) Then I'll make sure you're better than me, lad. You'll be the king I should have been.
And he means it. For the first time since the rebellion, since Lyanna, Robert Baratheon has found purpose beyond the bottom of a wine cup.
The Prince's Education
The years pass, and Joffrey grows. Robert's transformation astonishes the realm. The king still drinks, still enjoys a hunt or a whore when the mood strikes—he is Robert Baratheon, after all—but these indulgences no longer define him. Most of his time is spent in three pursuits: training, ruling, and above all, raising his heir.
The court notices the change. The small council meetings that Robert once avoided now have his full attention. Disputes that would have been delegated to Jon Arryn are heard directly by the king, often with young Joffrey sitting beside the throne, watching and learning.
But Robert's most innovative decision is to take the boy on progress throughout the realm.
The first journey takes them to Dorne. The journey south is long and hot, but Joffrey takes in every detail—the changing landscape, the different peoples, the shifting political currents. When they arrive at Sunspear, Prince Doran Martell greets them with the careful courtesy that defines Dornish diplomacy.
But it's Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper, who captures Joffrey's imagination.
Oberyn: (amused) So this is the prince I've heard so much about. They say you have your father's strength, boy. Do you have his courage?
Joffrey: (respectfully but unafraid) I hope to prove worthy of both, Prince Oberyn.
Oberyn throws back his head and laughs. For the next week, he personally oversees Joffrey's training. The Dornish style of fighting—fast, agile, deceptive—fascinates the young prince. Oberyn teaches him not just technique but philosophy.
