The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus emerged in December 2019 as a novel human pathogen causing a severe acute respiratory syndrome, called “COVID-19”. In the following months, the disease has spread internationally and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020.
Here at the University of Glasgow, we lead efforts to both research COVID-19 and support UK and Scottish Governments and NHS efforts against the pandemic by hosting a major COVID-19 testing facility in Glasgow. The research at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) includes fundamental studies to understand the nature of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Genomic sequencing and bioinformatics analyses of the virus from patient samples will help track linkages across the UK population in an effort to shut down ongoing transmission in real-time. The resulting data will also help identify potential therapies.

The UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute has fast-tracked the UCSC Genome Browser for SARS-CoV-2, which went live on April 2nd 2020. The Genome Browser aims to facilitate genome research by offering data visualization, genome annotations, and other tools.
The SARS-CoV-2 genome browser currently contains tracks for gene and protein annotations, variant data, and multiple genome alignments produced by the UCSC team. More tracks and resources will be inevitably added in the coming weeks. Researchers can dynamically interact with browser and upload their own custom data.
Look out for our other videos on this channel that help users who are new to the UCSC Genome Browser. The video tutorials will help users familiarise themselves with the browser, optimise the display, upload custom data, save and share sessions, and generate the highest quality outputs.

The illustration on our thumbnail was created at the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Image Library (PHIL), identification number #23312. The illustration shows the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses. Note the spikes that adorn the outer surface of the virus, which impart the look of a corona (crown) surrounding the virion, when viewed with an electron microscope.
