The Faroe Islands are a rugged North Atlantic archipelago between Scotland and Iceland, comprising 18 volcanic islands with steep cliffs, narrow fjords, and dramatic landscapes. Home to around 55,000 people, they are an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with their own parliament and prime minister.
The capital, Tórshavn, sits on Streymoy Island. Faroese and Danish are the official languages, with Faroese rooted in Old Norse. The climate is oceanic—cool, wet, and foggy—yet moderated by the North Atlantic Current, keeping harbours ice-free year-round.
Fishing dominates the economy, though renewable energy and digital infrastructure are rapidly advancing. Over 50% of electricity comes from green sources, with a goal of 100% by 2030. The islands are known for puffins, dramatic seascapes, and a strong cultural identity shaped by isolation and nature.
Despite their size, the Faroes punch above their weight in marine sustainability and cultural preservation. Think windswept beauty, Norse heritage, and a fiercely independent spirit.
