Ultimate Primitive Survival Shelter with Fire - Building an Indigenous American Longhouse Documentary: Shawn James of My Self Reliance invited us over to his cabin to build a Native Ameican Longhouse on his property. Natural materials needed to be gathered and we used many wilderness techniques. This is a bushcraft survival shelter but a long term one and is a challenging build. Over the fire cooking was a nice treat and we roasted turkeys and more meat. We also ate in the forest kitchen. Soon we needed to peel bark for the roof of the shelter which proved to be a huge job.

I learned a lot from this project. It gave me a much clearer picture of what life must have been like for tribal people living in Southeastern Canada and the Northeastern US. It truly would have been a community effort to build longhouses and gather materials, some were as long at 350 feet. And often, tribes needed to move to a new base every ten years roughly fore resource reasons.

We had planned to get together to do more on the longhouse, build bunks and storage areas, but Shawn decided to move after some unforeseen events and he took the longhouse down recently in order to use its materials for other projects.
