a traditional Hawaiian party or feast that is usually accompanied by entertainment. This Luau we are attending is from CHIEFS LUAU, there are a lot of places that offer LUAU, and each has its own unique twist to the celebration Among people from Hawaiʻi, the concepts of luau and party are often blended, resulting in Luau celebration for graduation, baptism, birthday, wedding, baby shower and may more celebrations.
In this Series part of the LU’AU we will be featuring the different native Polynesian dances that vary from the different pacific islands. Each of which having its unique style, rhythm, music and purpose. These serve as a window to their unique and amazing culture. And I can say that these are amazing to watch with all those dance movements, colorful costumes and so much more.
The 7TH dance we will be featuring is the love dance from SAMOA, and the SLAP DANCE ( FA’ATAUPATI)
Samoa, officially the Independent State of Samoa is a Polynesian Island Country discovered by the Lapita People around 3,500 years ago, who developed the Samoan Language and Samoan cultural identity. Samoa consists of two main islands (Savai’I and Upolu) and two smaller, inhabited islands (MAnono and Apolima) and several smaller, uninhabited islands, The capital city is Apia
Because of the Samoans' seafaring skills, pre-20th-century European explorers referred to the entire island group (which includes American Samoa) as the "Navigator Islands". Intimate sociocultural and genetic ties were maintained between Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga, and the archaeological record supports oral tradition and native genealogies that indicate interisland voyaging and intermarriage between precolonial Samoans, Fijians, and Tongans.
The Traditional Samoan Wedding Dance Royal Love dance/wedding dance is a dance that is only performed by the princess of the island, Traditionally being the daughter of the Chief of Samoa, and a performance only performed for leaders/visitors/special guests of countries to the island of SAMOA. This dance also symbolizes a woman entering a man’s family trough marriage and is performed on their wedding day. This dance is characterized by very smooth hand movements and gestures.
Her headdress and clothes handwoven by her own mother. Her fire knife made by her brothers to protect her, around her neck, made from the tusks from wild boars hunted by her brothers and men of the village. These bones are also the sharp points to print their traditional tatoos, dipped in coconut oil and charcoal dust. The men with tatoos are the men who survived the tatooing process, because some men die because of infection and blood loss. So they honor all these men dead and alive in preserving their culture and traditions through their performances and their dance
SLAP DANCE
The word pati in Fa'ataupati means "to clap", Fa'ataupati means to 'forcefully clap or to slap'.
Dances in Samoa would reflect on everyday life activities. In the 16th century there was an invasion of mosquitoes to the Kingdom, which later on became another part of everyday life, and it was there that the Fa'ataupati was created from when a man would forcefully slap his body This dance mimics a person slapping the mosquitoes off their body when bitten. From then on it became part of the Samoan culture. This dance requires a lot of coconut oil rubbed on the skin, as the slapping can sometimes leave marks on one's body. Regardless, it has never stopped the Samoan males having fun, and also having the opportunity to express themselves in a dance that is specifically for them. And this is all done with chanting and singing without any musical instruments.
So what are we waiting for, LETS CELEBRATE the Samoan Wedding Dance/ Royal Love dance/wedding dance and the SLAP Dance
