[GENE-Log/Indonesia/7] 1 a.m. hike, sulfuric gas, heavy rain...the Ijen hike was definitely one of the most challenging things we did during the trip. On the hike up, an elevation gain of 600m in rocky and steep terrain (some sections with gradients over 25%), followed by a 300m descent to the Blue Fire, with steep 45-60 degree slopes.
The Blue Fire is a natural phenomenon that only exists in 3 places in the world, Ijen being one of them. It happens when sulfuric gases combust. The fire used to be a lot bigger years ago, the size and intensity gradually reduced due to the sulfur mining...
It was quite an unforgettable experience, in all aspects!
The first half of the Indonesia trip wraps up as we continue to Bali and have our first rest day after one very, very packed week of travels. 😌
