A feature catching up with two great Dutch skaters, (Sjoukje Dijkstra Joan Haanappel) who both managed a place on the ladies podium (1st and 3rd). Some of you may remember, this was the event where the fabulous German free skater Ina Bauer, was placed 4th after school figures. She decided to drop out of the event and not participate in the 1960 Olympics. She went on to show skating and movie fame.
The two Dutch girls had invested time training in London with the great Swiss school figures coach Jacques Gershswiler (a contemporary of Dick Button).
An early bout in the Battle against school figures, which eventually led to the short program in 1973, and the elimination of figures in 1990.
