At –77°C in a heavy blizzard, a 70-year-old couple lives in an old spiral wooden treehouse. He hauls ice blocks from the lake while she rekindles the wood-burning iron stove and brews tea. They clear rooftop drifts, feed the coop with warm rice mash, then he ice-fishes a full bucket as she preps greens. Supper—fish-and-greens with fried eggs—is shared by the hearth. At dusk, wolves circle; beneath the treehouse he rigs rawhide foot-snares and plants a slow, smoky torch. The pack retreats into the white; inside, she knits and he mends the rod—no modern tools.
