Since it began in 1960, the Copa Libertadores has grown into the most important club competition in South America. In the early decades, teams from Argentina and Uruguay set the tone, with giants like Peñarol, Nacional, Independiente, and Estudiantes creating the first great dynasties. Independiente’s incredible run in the 1970s, when they won four titles in a row, is still unmatched today. As the tournament expanded through the 1980s and 1990s, new powers emerged - Flamengo, Grêmio, Olimpia, and São Paulo - and the competition began to gain a broader international audience.
From the 2000s onward, the Libertadores became even more competitive and global in visibility, with Brazilian and Argentine clubs taking center stage. Boca Juniors dominated the early 2000s, while rising financial strength helped Brazilian teams surge in the 2010s and 2020s, with big wins by Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Atlético Mineiro. The format evolved as well, including a larger field of teams and the introduction of a single-match final at a neutral venue starting in 2019. By 2025, the tournament remained a blend of historic rivalries and modern football, still widely seen as the peak of South American club competition.
