A century ago, Greater Syria was a center of Arab reform and ambition. The Great Arab Revolt produced the Arab Kingdom of Syria led by Faisal of the Hashimid dynasty. Yet within a decade of World War One, his kingdom had been carved up, Faisal was driven from Damascus, and Syria had been made into a French Mandate. So, why did France move so aggressively into the Levant? How did Hashemite ambitions collide with European imperial plans? And how did sectarian division become a tool of colonial rule?
