Lane-Based AI Traffic System in Unity | First Runtime Showcase
This video showcases the current runtime progress of a Lane-Based AI Traffic System I am developing in Unity.
The system is designed around explicit lanes and lane connections, allowing vehicles to move smoothly through roads, turns, and intersections without teleporting or snapping between paths. Each lane is made up of ordered waypoints, and vehicles transition through dedicated lane-connection paths when turning or merging, resulting in natural traffic flow.
The AI vehicle controller is physics-based, using WheelColliders and a Rigidbody so vehicles react realistically to road elevation, slopes, and bumps. Steering is calculated from waypoint direction, while speed is dynamically adjusted to slow down on sharp turns.
Obstacle detection is handled through multiple forward sensors, with detection distance scaling based on vehicle speed. This allows vehicles to anticipate obstacles earlier at higher speeds instead of braking abruptly.
Traffic signals are managed through a central intersection controller, ensuring coordinated traffic light behavior where only one direction is green at a time. Vehicles respond to their assigned traffic signal and stop smoothly at defined stop points—without trigger-based hacks or global searches.
