Music : Traditional Balkan Music

Marked by Byzantine, Ottoman, and Balkan influences, Bulgaria is renowned for its songs with subtle ornamentation and irregular rhythms that surprise the ear and draw the body into an unpredictable pulse.
From the Balkan Mountains to the shores of the Black Sea and the gateways of Anatolia, the Bulgarian Echoes Ensemble explores a rich and contrasting musical landscape, shaped by melodies full of history and vitality.
The program highlights emblematic traditional Balkan instruments — the kaval (flute) and the Bulgarian tambura (luth) — in dialogue with accordion, guitar, cello, and drums. Rooted in tradition, this music also opens toward jazz, Romani music, and other contemporary influences.

Marquée par des influences byzantines, ottomanes et balkaniques, la Bulgarie est renommée pour ses chants aux ornementations subtiles et ses rythmes irréguliers, qui surprennent l’oreille et entraînent le corps dans une pulsation imprévisible.
Des montagnes des Balkans aux rives de la mer Noire, jusqu’aux portes de l’Anatolie, l’Ensemble Bulgarian Echoes explore un territoire musical riche et contrasté, porté par des mélodies chargées d’histoire et de vitalité.
Le programme met à l’honneur des instruments traditionnels emblématiques des Balkans — kaval (flûte oblique) et tambura bulgare (luth) — en dialogue avec l’accordéon, la guitare, le violoncelle et la batterie. Cette musique puise dans les traditions tout en s’ouvrant au jazz, à la musique tsigane et à d’autres influences contemporaines.
