ECHOES OF CRIMEA :
Kara Deniz (“Black Sea”)
The term Kara Deniz, meaning “Black Sea,” lies at the heart of the history of the Crimean Tatar people. As the cradle of an ancient and vibrant culture, this sea has for centuries embodied a crossroads of exchange between Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Anatolia. The Crimean Peninsula, situated at the confluence of these worlds, stands as a living reflection of this rich heritage.
Deeply attached to their homeland, the Crimean Tatar communities were deported in 1944 on Stalin’s orders to Central Asia, in a tragic exile. This collective trauma remained an open wound until their gradual return to Crimea began in the late 1980s. Heirs to a rich cultural blend, these communities continue to proudly preserve the traditions of their ancestors—especially through music.
This program unveils the soul of Crimean Tatar musical tradition through emblematic pieces such as the moving Agyr Ava (with its asymmetrical 9-beat rhythm) and the lively Haytarma (in 7 beats), subtly infused with jazz. Their melodies, rich in ornamentation and Eastern inflections, offer a space for virtuoso improvisation and reflect the vitality of this living heritage.

Le terme Kara Deniz, qui signifie « Mer Noire », est au cœur de l’histoire des peuples tatars de Crimée. Berceau d’une culture ancienne et vivante, cette mer incarne depuis des siècles un lieu d’échange à la confluence de l’Europe orientale, du Caucase et de l’Anatolie. La péninsule de Crimée, située à la croisée de ces mondes, en est le miroir vivant.
Profondément attachées à leur terre natale, les communautés tatares de Crimée furent déportées en 1944 sur ordre de Staline vers l’Asie centrale, dans un exil tragique. Ce traumatisme collectif demeura une blessure vive jusqu’au retour progressif vers la Crimée, amorcé à la fin des années 1980. Héritières d’un riche métissage culturel, ces communautés perpétuent encore aujourd’hui avec fierté les traditions de leurs ancêtres, notamment à travers la musique.
Ce programme révèle l’âme de la tradition musicale tatare à travers des pièces emblématiques comme le poignant Agyr Ava (à la rythmique asymétrique à 9 temps) ainsi que le dynamique Haytarma (à 7 temps), subtilement infusé de jazz. Leurs mélodies, riches en ornementations aux accents orientaux, offrent un terrain d’improvisation virtuose et reflètent la vitalité de cet héritage musical.
