1973 F2 in Estoril

In the 1970s, F2 was like being at the gateway to F1 and the Estoril Circuit was the ideal setting for some exciting races where talents such as René Arnoux, Jacques Laffite, Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost emerged.

Formula 2, which allowed drivers who were unable to secure a place in Formula 1 to compete internationally, would visit Portugal four times. Named I, II, III and IV Estoril Grand Prix, the first edition took place on October 21, 1973, the second on March 9, 1975, the third on August 8, 1976 and the fourth on October 2, 1977. .

In 1973, Jean-Pierre Jarier, driving the official team's March 732, dominated and was the first to cross the finish line in the two heats that made up the race. Jacques Coulon finished 2nd, in another Mach, ahead of Rolf Stommelen, 3rd with a FINA Brabham BT40. The first Portuguese to drive an F1 “Nicha” Cabral was 8th, with the other official March, ahead of his teammate, Hans-Joachim Stuck.

In 1974 a second edition was planned, on an undefined date, but political events made it impossible to hold, and it was postponed until the following year.

F2 was created in 1948 and would be replaced by Formula 3000 in 1985, because year after year it became more and more expensive. In the new millennium it appears again with the name Formula 2 and is designed to make racing accessible to teams and, as in the last century, to offer drivers very competitive races before (few) entering the “Great Circus” of Formula 1.
