Here's another part from my long summer of backpacking through various mountain ranges in Eastern Europe. Having already crossed the Vitosha, Verila and Rila Mountains on the Bulgarian E4, I continued following the trail through the spectacular Pirin range.
I absolutely loved the Pirin. The rocky terrain brought back lots of memories from my hike along the Haute Route Pyrenees in 2016. The main difference being that this mountain range was much more compact making resupply etc easy and the paths were consistently marked. There were also regular huts, and everything in Bulgaria is very cheap! Basically, it's an ideal destination for anyone wanting a shorter mountain hike.
Oh and it also had the most epic ridge that I've ever been along- "Koncheto", which as far as I'm aware, means 'foal'. This is because in bad weather conditions, (or for the nervous), it's necessary to traverse the knife-edge ridge whilst straddling it like a horse!
