While the LMS and LNER were developing their Pacific 4-6-2 express passenger locomotives in the 1930's, the GWR and SR had already spent some years on 4 cylinder 4-6-0 designs for their prestige expresses. When introduced in 1926 Richard Maunsell's Lord Nelson was the most powerful locomotive on the Southern Railway.
