Texas banned the sale and distribution of lab-grown meat starting September 1, 2025, through Senate Bill 261, signed by Governor Greg Abbott. This two-year ban prohibits the manufacture, processing, and sale of cell-cultured protein and has a two-year expiration date unless renewed. Supporters, like the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, argue the ban protects consumers from potential health risks and traditional ranchers, while opponents claim it stifles innovation and conflicts with federal regulations.
Apart from banning cultivated meat, Abbott signed a bill called Make Texas Healthy Again, aligning with health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s MAHA movement. A key focus? To review the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on human health, keying into a major point of discourse in American food culture.
