Il Tortuguero, nel nord-est del paese, è una selvaggia area costiera di foreste e lagune. È un mondo incantato, lontano da tutto. Ci vogliono tre-quattro ore di una strada dissestata e un’ora e mezza di barca a motore per arrivare qui, da san Josè. Il Mawamba Lodge – come i pochi altri lodge qui – è immerso nella foresta, sonnolento e spartano quanto basta. Ci sono le amache sul fiume, per cullarsi pigri, ci sono le iguane giganti sugli alberi, farfalle dappertutto, e le magnifiche rane arboree dagli occhi rossi sotto le foglie del giardino. Il Tortuguero si esplora in barca. Si naviga lenti sui mille canali, tra coccodrilli e caimani. Sopra la testa volteggiano le scimmie urlatrici, aironi aquile e tucani volano nel cielo intenso, i bradipi, incredibilmente pigri, si muovono lenti sui rami più alti. Sulle spiagge, in autunno, le tartarughe marine verdi depositano le uova.

Sul Pacifico, invece, l’area più bella e accessibile è quella del parco nazionale Manuel Antonio. Passato il rio Tarcoles, con i suoi famosi e impressionanti coccodrilli addormentati al sole, si raggiunge questo posto pazzesco dove l’incontaminata foresta pluviale bacia spiagge tropicali di incredibile bellezza. L’Arenas del Mar è un sogno di lusso immerso in una natura che lascia senza parole. All’altezza dei balconi affacciati sull’oceano, passeggiano i cebi cappuccini, le iguane e i bradipi. Uccelli coloratissimi volano dappertutto. La Playita, a nord, è una spiaggetta bellissima e riparata, un tempo per nudisti, ora per gli ospiti dell’Arenas del Mar. A sud c’è Playa Espadilla, dove la brezza e la luce del tramonto si fissa nel cuore per sempre. Nel Parque National Manuel Antonio, le guide naturalistiche aiutano ad avvistare gli animali più strani nel folto della foresta: formichieri, armadilli, procioni. Alla fine della camminata immersi nella natura, si arriva a Playa Manuel Antonio, protetta dal promontorio roccioso di Punta Catedral: l’acqua è tiepida e tranquilla e ci sono scimmie ovunque.

Tortuguero, in the northeast of the country, is a wild coastal area of forests and lagoons. It is an enchanted world, far from everything. It takes three to four hours on a bumpy road and an hour and a half by motorboat to get here, from San José. The Mawamba Lodge – like the few other lodges here – is immersed in the forest, sleepy and spartan enough. There are hammocks on the river, to rock yourself lazily, there are giant iguanas in the trees, butterflies everywhere, and beautiful red-eyed tree frogs under the leaves of the garden. Tortuguero is explored by boat. You navigate slowly on the thousand canals, among crocodiles and alligators. Howler monkeys circle above your head, herons, eagles and toucans fly in the intense sky, sloths, incredibly lazy, move slowly on the highest branches. On the beaches, in autumn, green sea turtles lay their eggs.

On the Pacific, the most beautiful and accessible area is that of the Manuel Antonio National Park. After passing the Tarcoles River, with its famous and impressive crocodiles sleeping in the sun, you reach this crazy place where the pristine rainforest kisses tropical beaches of incredible beauty. Arenas del Mar is a dream of luxury immersed in a nature that leaves you speechless. At the height of the balconies overlooking the ocean, capuchin monkeys, iguanas and sloths stroll. Colorful birds fly everywhere. La Playita, to the north, is a beautiful and sheltered beach, once a nudist beach, now for guests of Arenas del Mar. To the south is Playa Espadilla, where the breeze and the light of the sunset are fixed in your heart forever. In the Manuel Antonio National Park, nature guides help you spot the strangest animals in the thick of the forest: anteaters, armadillos, raccoons. At the end of the walk immersed in nature, you arrive at Playa Manuel Antonio, protected by the rocky promontory of Punta Catedral: the water is warm and calm and there are monkeys everywhere.
