Here's another untitled beauty from the Hamblen Collection, which is a homemade manuscript of 19th Century American fiddle tunes from the Hamblen family, who were from Virginia and then moved to Indiana. This one is notated as "A Virginia Violin Melody" and is attributed to the repertoire of David Russell Hamblen (1809-1895). It very closely resembles "Go Home with the Girls in the Morning" as played by Kentucky fiddler Art Stamper (1933-2005), the son of revered source fiddler Hiram Stamper (1893-1992). Some people call that tune "Snake Chapman's Tune" (Snake apparently learned it from Bob Wills off the radio). This Hamblen tune is not quite an exact match in the high part, but some might find it refreshing. I've been enjoying playing it. Art played "Go Home..." in ADAD, and that's a lovely tuning for this Hamblen tune as well, but here I am several steps below standard pitch.
