No. 6 of Schumann’s Papillons is a highly exciting piece, opening with a wild and impetuous gesture, followed by a tender middle section, a moment of mysterious suspension, and a final surge of energy. It is rich in musical refinements, subtle details, and clearly articulated phrases throughout. The indicated tempo — dotted quarter note equals 84 — should unquestionably be understood as a pendulum-like motion, providing a sense of balance and inevitability. Performing the piece at twice this speed is entirely devoid of meaning, both from a technical standpoint and in terms of musical expression.
