Small, laneway homes were a standard feature in the back lanes of North American cities for a very long time. Until the 1950's, when many cities passed bylaws making them illegal. Emma Cubitt in Hamilton successfully lobbied the City to reverse the 1957 bylaw so it is once again allowed to have two separate homes on one lot.
The Selway Family are the first movers. Converting their old coach house into a dwelling, in order to test the new legislation - and provide the city with a new home.
Tiny houses, laneway houses or auxiliary dwelling units (ADU) - whatever you want to call them - are coming back. Fulfilling the same role as they did for decades: contributing to the urban fabric, providing density and affordable housing and making a city more life-sized.
Other cities are now following suit and reversing the old laws. The tiny house trend is over a century old - and now it's coming back to the urban context.
