The Hearst Family was inducted into the California Hall of Fame by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver in a ceremony at the California Museum on December 6, 2006. Introduction by Diane Disney Miller, daughter of Walt Disney.
The Hearst family was renowned for their contributions to civic life, philanthropy, and public service. George Hearst earned a fortune as a miner and businessman, then served in the U.S. Senate from 1887 until his death in 1891. His wife, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, became one of the country's leading philanthropists after inheriting his estate. Along with funding research expeditions, libraries, and schools and helping establish the precursor to the PTA, she founded the Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley and was the first female UC Regent. Their only child, William Randolph Hearst, created an extraordinarily successful media empire and, with architect Julia Morgan, built the remarkable Hearst Castle, now a California State Park.
