Annie is the matriarch of our favorite falcon family living in UC Berkeley's Campanile. Since her arrival, she's brought 22 chicks into the world — including Lawrencium (aka Larry), who now nests on Alcatraz Island with her own family.
But back in the 1970s, it was a very different story for peregrine falcons. At the time, they were nearly extinct in California.
Fortunately, a group of UC researchers banded together to protect this fragile bird population and help it recover. Today, peregrine falcons have rebounded even beyond their historic numbers, and now thrive across the state — including our cities.
