*A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge* (1985) is the weird, sweaty middle child of the franchise—the one everyone side-eyed for years but has since been embraced as a gloriously chaotic, queer-coded fever dream. It’s the sequel that didn’t follow the rules, didn’t stick to the formula, and instead went completely off the rails in a way that’s now legendary.

Gone are the booby traps, the fight-back final girls. Instead, we get *Jesse Walsh**, played by Mark Patton, a kid who’s not just running from Freddy—he’s *becoming him. Freddy doesn’t want to kill Jesse. He wants to be inside him. The subtext isn’t even sub—it’s neon. This is Freddy as an internal possession, a monstrous manifestation of repressed identity, and the movie leans into it so hard that it practically slaps you across the face with its queerness.

Let’s talk about *the gym teacher.* The leather bar. The shower scene. The towel snapping. Freddy’s razor glove emerging from Jesse’s body in a scene that’s part birth, part exorcism, and all metaphor. Whether the filmmakers knew what they were doing or not, this movie screamed what most 80s horror barely whispered.

Mark Patton’s performance is fantastic—raw, frantic, and completely vulnerable. He’s not the standard-issue horror protagonist. He’s terrified, confused, and deeply isolated. He’s not just fighting Freddy—he’s fighting himself. There’s no boisterous heroism here, just a kid breaking down under a nightmare that won’t let go.

Freddy, played by Robert Englund, is meaner this time. He’s sharper, he’s louder, and he’s no longer just a dream demon—he’s clawing into the real world through Jesse, crashing pool parties and absolutely losing his mind with slasher glee. “You are all my children now” is pure villain gold.

The rest of the movie? Tonally all over the place. There’s a love interest (Lisa), but her chemistry with Jesse feels about as forced as the heterosexual panic the studio desperately tried to jam into the story. There’s an exploding bird for some reason. Freddy shows up at a pool party and starts slicing up teens like he’s catering a barbecue. The rules of the dream world? Completely ignored. But you know what? It *works*.

*Nightmare 2* is messy, campy, and absolutely fascinating. For years it was treated like the franchise’s weird misstep, but now? It’s a cult classic with real depth. It’s a movie about fear, identity, and possession, wrapped in 80s slasher cheese and drenched in sweat. It might not have played by the rules—but that’s exactly why it stands out. Freddy didn’t just come back in this one—he kicked down the closet door with a razor glove.
