Tree Closest to Sky

There’s a tree on Adak Island that might just be the highest growing tree in the Aleutians — not tallest, but highest in elevation. I strapped on my skis and dropped into a ravine to find it.
This video is about more than just a tree. It’s about searching for something rare, something clinging to life in the harshest conditions — and maybe seeing a bit of ourselves in it. These trees were planted during WWII and have somehow endured: storms, isolation, time. Now they grow from cliff edges and creek beds, quietly holding on.
Join me as I navigate snow, wind, and a few philosophical tangents — measuring trees, questioning tree-counting methods, and musing on what it means to live “on the edge of the world.”
Adak’s trees don’t just survive. They persist. Just like the people who call this island home.
