Tragbal Pass: At an elevation of 11,672 feet, the Originally Tragbal Pass also known as Razdan Pass offers mesmerizing views and connects remote regions, including those near the LOC, with Bandipora in North Kashmir.
Gurez: Known as part of an ancient civilization “Dardistan” stretching between Sharada Peeth in the west, Minimarg in the north, Drass in the east, and Bagtore in the south. The predominant tribe, “Dards” inhabit the area and the adjoining regions of northern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. Once, an important stopover on the Silk Route, Gurez made the Dards a highly powerful tribe. The population of Gurez is estimated to be about 37,992 (2011 census) and is scattered among fifteen villages. The river Kishanganga flowing through the valley Gurez presents heart throbbing look along through the rich meadows. while the mountains on either side present a succession of most abrupt precipices, and Alpine lodges.
Dawar: is the ancient capital of the Dards, located in Gurez Valley. Situated at about 135 kilometers from Srinagar, to the north of the Kashmir valley the fascinating valley is spread at five miles in length lying at an elevation of about 8000 ft. above sea level.
Trout fishing is a very frequent and popular sport here. Moreover, camping near the river is another hobby of the tourists here.
Due to heavy snowfall (around 2 metres (7 ft)) and closure of Tragbal Pass in winter, the valleys both Gurez and Tulail remain cut off for about six months of the year.
Habba Khatoon: From 1579 to 1586 AD Yousuf Shah Chak was the last Independent Muslim Ruler /Emperor of Kashmir who is said to be a Dard from Gilgit entered into Kashmir through Gurez.
Habba Khatoon originally known as "Zoon" was a poetess of Kashmir. She was a beautiful and intelligent woman from Saffron village chandhara.
The emperor was enthralled by her beauty, intelligence and poetry. But there lies a sad story behind the capture of Yousuf Shah Chak and getting imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Akbar during his conquest of Kashmir. It is believed that his beloved Habba Khatoon used to wander near a peak to look for her lover. Now the name “Habba Khatoon” stands for the Gurez’s that most formidable pyramid shaped peak which overlooks Dawar, the central township of Gurez.
Tulail Valley: Going east from Gurez town Tulail is the next stop towards Dras. Tulail Valley is a Himalayan sub-valley of Gurez in Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an average altitude of (9,020 ft) Tulail Valley is connected by a 40 km motorable road which leads from Gurez town.
The first and the last villages of Tulail Valley are Burnai and Checkwali.
Tulail Valley is formed by the east to west flowing Kishanganga River which originates from the Kishansar Lake in the northern alpine meadows of Sonamarg. Tulail is also connected with main Kashmir valley by hiking trails which lead to Naranag over Satsar Pass and to Sonamarg through Gadsar Lake.
Being situated very close to the Burzil Pass, which leads into Astore, the inhabitants of Gurez are ethnic Dards /Shins. They speak the Shina language and have the same styles of culture. However, Kashmiri speaking people are equally inhabited in the valley.
