Over 20 years ago, I started collecting primarily Stanley hand planes, trying to collect an example of each size and major revision. I struck out trying to find a Bedrock series plane, or so I thought that was the case. A few weeks after building the plane holder for my #3 through #8 planes, I found a Stanley Bedrock 605 plane in another corner of my shop. In this video, I cleaned up the Bedrock 605 plane, removing surface rust using WD-40 and steel wool, and cleaned up the plane’s black surfaces with mineral spirits. I also tested Rust-Oleum Rust Dissolver on a much more rusty Stanley #5 plane. Once the planes were cleaned up, I put a sharp edge on the Bedrock 605’s plane iron using a water stone and a Tormek. The plane was then put to use for the first time in more than 20 years, turning a rough sawn board into a pile of shavings.
While not mentioned in the video, a coat of paste wax was applied to the planes immediately after the video ended.
